"Appetite for art" - Gdańsk in winter

Discovering Gdańsk in winter is a journey into a completely different dimension than the commonly known one. Although low temperatures and sometimes snowy weather limit some typical seaside activities such as sunbathing, they also open the door to new experiences. And we will focus on them today :)

Peaceful walks around the charming corners of the city, visiting monuments and enjoying local cuisine can become an unforgettable adventure that will awaken your appetite for more. Museums, theaters and exhibitions are waiting for this. I invite you to travel to Gdańsk a little off-season.

"Olga Boznańska" - the intimacy of self-portrait and portrait

Since the beginning of December, we have been hosting works by an outstanding Polish painter of the Young Poland period in Gdańsk. Olga Boznańska, because this is her, is known mainly for her wonderful portraits and self-portraits, emphasizing her unique artistic skills and sensitivity to human emotions. In her works, the artist focuses and beautifully captures details, and subtly captures the psyche of the characters portrayed. It's worth taking a closer look at it.

Exhibition, which you can see at the Main Town Hall in Gdańsk until May 16, 2024, will take you to the world of intimate glances and emotions, where every detail hides history and mystery. This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the art of one of the most outstanding Polish painters and get to know her fascinating works, which are usually under the supervision of the National Museum in Krakow.

I sincerely encourage you to immerse yourself in this atmosphere of art, for which you often lack time, especially during summer holidays, which is a pity. Admission is ticketed: a regular ticket costs PLN 25, a reduced ticket costs PLN 18, and a family ticket costs PLN 67. Please note that the works are available to visitors from Wednesday to Sunday from: 10:00 – 16:00 (Thursdays until 18:00).

Blue Lamb on Granary Island

A place you definitely cannot miss when in Gdańsk is "Blue Lamb". And although when you hear this name you may think of flocks of sheep and blue pastures associated more with the Tatra mountain pastures, I will surprise you. The Blue Lamb is a historic granary in the heart of the city, dating back to the 16th century. It was used to store grain, and goods were unloaded through wide gates, both from the water and land sides. Today it is a really attractive branch of the Archaeological Museum.

Walking through its halls, you can enjoy the extraordinary atmosphere and preserved construction elements that remind you of the extraordinary splendor of Hanseatic Gdańsk.

Średniowieczna uliczka hanzeatycka

In the museum you will find permanent and temporary exhibitions. My attention was stolen by the permanent exhibition "Medieval Hanseatic Street", which allows you to travel back in time to the 14th/15th century Gdańsk. On the reconstructed street you will see former inhabitants of Gdańsk, i.e. a shoemaker, a blacksmith and a merchant, dressed in costumes bringing back to life past eras. You will see their houses and workshops, as well as the places where they rested after the hardships of everyday life - an inn and a bathhouse.

If, like me, you like experiencing the past, I recommend taking a "walk" :)

Zza miedzy i zza morza

The temporary exhibition, available only until March 3, 2024, which will be of interest to culinary art lovers is "Zza miedzy i zza morza". If you are wondering how we know that the ancient inhabitants of Gdańsk liked fatty foods and why only a spoon was enough to eat most dishes, you will find the answers in the Blue Lamb.

The exhibition includes recreated parts of tableware and kitchen equipment from the 16th to 18th centuries. You will learn about the changing image of the Gdańsk table and the types of dishes used in the kitchen and pantry. You will also learn how porcelain and faience reached Gdańsk via trade routes.

The Blue Lamb Granary is open from Tuesday to Friday from 08:30 to 16:30 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 17:00. A regular ticket costs PLN 14, a reduced ticket costs PLN 10, and a family ticket costs PLN 30, but on Thursday admission is free :)

Tastes of Gdańsk

Today I have presented to you some suggestions perfect for the spirit. Time for something for the body :)

"The Kitchen of Old Gdańsk" is a culinary workshop for adults, which will take place on February 24, 2024 at the Błękitny Baranek Granary. The host - Aleksandra Kucharska - is the co-author of the book "Tastes of Gdańsk", so you can be sure that you will come under the wing of an expert in Gdańsk dishes. During the workshops you will learn to prepare:

  • herring salad in a different way,
  • anchovy butter,
  • wreath – cookies.

Perfect for lovers of discovering new flavors and enthusiasts of history, not only the "textbook" one :)

If the thought alone makes your mouth water, be sure to reserve a place, as the workshop group is small. The cost of participation is PLN 125 per person.

Summary

Regardless of whether you are going for a romantic walk to the Motława River, you are a fan of culinary trips and are looking for local flavors, or you are fascinated by history and architecture, winter Gdańsk will surprise you with its richness and diversity.

I wish you many magical moments, unforgettable impressions and a whetted appetite... for art.
